  intro

Ice Cream habit's mighty bad

It's the worst old habit that I ever had

Hey, hey, honey take a lick on me

I went to the co-op on the scene

Saw a sign on the window

Says 'outta praline'

Hey, hey, honey have a lick on me

If ya don't believe Ice Cream is good

Ask any woman in the neighborhood

Hey, hey, honey scoop a lick on me

I love my Jerry and I love my Ben

I love Ice Cream and don't need no men

Hey, hey, honey have a lick on me

Since Ice Cream went into style

You can catch 'em spoon it down all the while

Hey, hey, honey have a lick on me

Well, it takes a little chocolate to give me ease

Slap it on your thighs long as you please

Hey, hey, honey lick a pint on me

    instrumental

Well, it takes a little chocolate to give me ease

Slap it on your thighs long as you please

Hey, hey, honey lick a pint on me

"The Memphis Jug Band's Cocaine Habit Blues, while an exceptional song, just hit a close nerve after seeing the damage done by said habit to some of our friends and neighbors, and we finally just decided to stop doing it. (Well, maybe once in a while we'd play it at practice just to be naughty).
But it's such a fun melody... finally I took the bull by the horns, modifying it to a point of semi-respectability after observing more times than I would care to admit the preference of persons of the fairer gender to the company of Messers Ben and Jerry to that of myself and my fellows (alack! alas!).
At any rate the reworked tune was only attempted once, then shelved for a few months. We dusted it off recently, reworked some over-fusssyness I originally had in the choruses and voila! - a new favorite!"

P.S. A reissue CD came out recently that has been getting some airplay on KFAI, containing a Mississippi string band called Freeny’s Barn Dance Band, which did more or less the some thing with this Memphis Jug Band song when they changed it to Croquet Habits back in 1930.
So much for original idears.....
